Phaeton, the son of Helios, was handsome and conceited and he inadvertently offended many people because of his arrogant, rude and ambitious personality.

One day, someone told him: "You are not the son of Helios!" He could not stand this and asked his mother: "Is Helios really my father?" No matter how his mother assured, he still did not believe his mother. So his mother said: "The one who made fun of you is the son of Zeus with high status; you can ask Helios if you don't believe me!"
After listening to Phaeton's question, Helios smiled: "Of course you are my son!" However, Phaethon still would not believe but he knew that Helios never told lies, so he required driving his father's chariot to prove that he was Helios's son. "No!" Helios was frightened because the sun dominated all things and a single mistake would lead to a huge disaster. However, Helios could not convince his son and he showed how to drive the chariot but Phaeton didn't listen to his father and he drove the chariot away immediately.
As a result, everything on the earth died of heat or cold and the time was in a mess. In order to stop Phaeton, Hera sent a Scorpion which bit the ankle of Phaeton and Zeus hit him with the terrible thunder and lightning, thus Phaeton fell to the ground and died.
The human world was quiet again. In order to commemorate the Scorpion which was also killed by lightning, the constellation was named Scorpio.

Another story goes that Orion was very arrogant and he boasted that no animal in the world was his opponent. Hera sent a poisonous scorpion to bite his feet and Orion died of poison. Later, both the scorpion and Orion came to the sky and they took each other as the enemy, so they lived on opposite sides of the sky. Whenever the Scorpio rises from the east horizon, the Orion will leave from the west immediately.

Legend goes that Poseidon, the God of the Sea, had a son Orion who was mighty and robust but didn't like to live in the water rather than hunting in the wild.
Poseidon loved this son very much and he endowed Orion a magic ability of running in the forest like flying and walking on the sea as if on the ground. Therefore, Orion was no longer an ordinary hunter but he was very arrogant and he boasted that no animal in the world was his opponent. Hera though he was too arrogant, so she sent a poisonous scorpion to bite his feet and Orion died of poison. In order to reward the scorpion, Hera promoted it to the sky, thus today's Scorpio.
